CHANGE: FAQ for Moving Participants

How do I participate in the study?
To participate, please fill out this online questionnaire to determine your eligibility. We will then contact you by phone to explain further details about the study.
What do I receive in honorarium?
Upon successful completion of the study, you will receive a $25 gift card to either Starbucks, Shoppers, Chapters, or Safeway. You will be contacted again after the move, and upon successful completion of the after-move study, they will receive additional $25 gift card. Furthermore, you will be entered into a draw to win furniture gift card of up to $300.
I probably will move, but I’m not sure. Am I eligible?
No. You are not eligible for the study if you are not certain that you are moving.
I’m going away on vacation during the dates you assigned me. Can I complete the study on my vacation?
No. We want to make sure that you are doing the regular, everyday activities at your current residence. Please contact us to wear the meter and fill out the diary on a different date.
I am moving in less than 4 weeks, am I eligible?
No. Four weeks is not enough time for the participants to complete the tasks or to ensure that the mail is delivered. You must contact us at least 4 to 6 weeks before the moving date.
Can my spouse or another adult who lives with me do the study?
No. Only one adult per household can take part in the study per household. If, however, another adult is a roommate who will be moving to a different property then, yes, they may participate too but we need to enroll them separately.
Can my child participate in the study?
Yes, one child (between the age of 12-18) per household may participate in the study.

The following cities are not part of ‘Metro Vancouver’ and would thus be ineligible: Squamish, Chilliwack, Agassiz, Mission, Harrison Hot Springs,  Gulf Island communities (e.g., Galiano and Salt Spring islands), Sunshine Coast (e.g., Gibsons, Sechelt), Whistler, Pemberton, Hope, Victoria, Kelowna, or any other locations outside of BC or Canada.
Do I have to wear the Activity Meter at all times during the day?
Yes, you must wear the device at all times during the day,  except when you are in shower/ underwater or in vigorous contact sports (i.e. basketball, football, wrestling) where the device can get damaged. You may take off the device before you go to bed.
Can you send me the results of the study?
We may make an executive summary of the report for the public, and we would be happy to give you a copy then, but the final summary probably won’t be released for a few years.
Would I receive a partial honorarium for completing the study only partially?
You will receive your honorarium in two parts. The first $25 gift card is sent after we have processed your survey package pre-move, and the second post-move. If you are not able to complete the second part of the study later on, this doesn’t mean you need to return your first gift card. We are not able to send out smaller gift cards for partial completion of the first phase.
What are you using this information for?
We are interested in knowing whether people’s travel patterns, eating habits, and physical activity levels reflect the environment in which they live or their own preferences. For example, you may walk more because you live in a neighbourhood downtown where you can walk to most things, but you may also have chosen to live downtown because you like to walk. We are trying to understand this relationship.
When will I be contacted for the second phase of the study?
We will contact you in about 4 to 6 months after your moving date.
Who should I contact if I have more questions?
If you have further questions about the study, feel free to email us at spph.act-trans@ubc.ca or call (604) 822-1898.
